Formal Dinner outfit ASOS Mango 2

Clashing patterns shamelessly... is this formal enough?

As much as we all enjoy a relaxed dinner evening with our beloved ones, sometimes, on very special occasions, we also love a night out at one of the best restaurants in town. But heck, what to wear for a dinner date at a 5-star-restaurant? A sweater and jeans definitely won't work... so let me provide you with some ideas to such an event of marvellous wines, foods and service.

But first, a little story a friend just told me concerning just this topic. For her birthday, she, her brother and her parents went to one of Berlin's finest restaurants called "Bocca di Bacco". It's a lovely place, My boyfriend and I had our 3-year anniversary dinner there and loved the food and atmosphere to bits. But it's a very formal place where servants still wear bow-ties and ladies dress up in little evening dresses while the men usually turn up in their nicest suits. The whole thing reminds you of a somewhat superficial parade.
The dresscode is an unwritten rule that you better obey. If not, well...
My friend's poor parents apparently weren't aware of the fact that this was a very formal restaurant and even though my friend had told them not to bring their backpacks and generally not to look like the tourists they were, they arrived wearing exactly that said backback and a couple of other small bags "just to be sure". We know our parents, don't we? Of course, her mother didn't wear a dress or suit jacket, but sat there, wearing a yellow t-shirt. I know, I remember telling you about my wish of more acceptance towards people wearing whatever they want wherever they are only a few days ago, but apparently it's some people's opinion that a yellow t-shirt is not what you'd be wearing at a formal dinner date. It's one of these things that these kind of restaurants like keep up and I guess many people go and have dinner at these kind of places to feel a little more glamorous than usual.
So when my friend noticed a man at the next table staring at the not-so-glamorously dressed parents the whole evening long, she got quite angry. I agree that it was really not very nice of this man to stare like this, but sadly, at a restaurant such as "Bocca di Bacco", people will really judge you if you don't blend in with the crowd - clothing wise. It just has to be expected, if you like it or not. Next time, my friend should probably warn her parents about the dress code of the places they were planning to attend, just to avoid an uncomfortable situation.

My dinner outfit on the other hand was built around a clash of crazy patterns with my ASOS dress and ZARA clutch, indulging in the current black-and-white trend but giving it an elegant touch with my wavy hair and white jacket by Mango.
The interior of this place is a whole different story of course. The horrible Egyptian inspired carpet is so very bad taste, it's already cool again. These pictures were taken back when we were having dinner at the famous "Café Imperial" in Prague during our Easter holiday. It was incredible, by the way.

Did you ever have to dress up for a formal dinner? What did you wear? Let's discuss our outfits!

Was habt ihr dabei getragen? Erzählt mir doch von euren Outfits!
