"Show me what you wear and I'll predict where you work!"

I don't currently work in an office, but since I'm sure that many of you do or will do in the future, I decided to put together a more business-like outfit (but with a twist) than my usual rocky-girly kind of thing. Just for the hell of it, no matter what the result may be.

What is your opinion on the uniformity of dressing at our workplaces?

I have got quite a lot to say about this topic, actually. First of all, I am a rather heavily tattooed lady (not in comparison to some tattooers or their girlfriends, of course) and my body art tends to irritate at many a workplace.
When I first applied for this job as an elementary school teacher I used to do, I wasn't so sure they would accept all my tattoos, especially those on my arms as they are on constant display there. But they didn't mind and I was positively surprised. Yet, I still hear people say things like "You work at an elementary school? And it is okay with all your tattoos?" Yeah, at this school, it is. I might not be so lucky at other places, though. But it's the year 2013 and I still have hope for our society. I think it won't be a big deal at all in a couple of years, but perhaps, that is just wishful thinking.

I used to work as a waitress for many years and the uniformity is reaching its extremes in this area of work. Everybody had to wear white shirts and black trousers, a black bow-tie and black shoes. Penguin-style. The hair had to be tied back in a bun and all tattoos had to be hidden at all cost. A waiter with tattoos gives away a dirty impression, they once told me. Wow, crazy! Actually, this kind of uniformity was too much for me. Even though it has its reasons, of course. But it is just not something for me.

A certain uniformity when it comes to dressing can indeed be found at every workplace. In my old area (at school), people didn't quite tend to dress up in the latest fashion, nobody owned a designer bag or wore high heels. The uniform was unspectacular jumpers in dark blue, dark green or dark red, jeans or pants in dark colours and usually sneakers, Birkenstock-sandals or comfortable boots. If you are a fashion blogger or just someone really excited about fashion, you would soon feel out of place amongst your colleagues. I like dressing in colours, in leather and lace. I love heels and make-up. But after three years of having tried to keep my style up at work as well as in in private, I'd given up, mostly for comfort reasons, but also because people (parents of my students in particular) weren't taking me as seriously when I was dressed up and made-up as when I was dressed down in a jumper, flats and close-to-no make-up. Crazy, huh? But of course, the majority of people still thinks that when you are dressed up in a more exciting way than the general norm, you are a superficial idiot of a girl with nothing but lipstick filling your brain. I've experienced it, I know what I speak of!

All I can hope for is more open-mindedness among us people (that includes me as well). If you love your cargo-pants and beanie-hat, I won't try to change you! If you feel most comfortable in 80s denim, DO IT! Except if it secures your safety of course - then, uniformity of clothing at work is important. But of course, this is not what I'm talking about right now. Everywhere else, the way you dress should not be a reason to judge you. This whole topic reminds me so much of "Skins"-character Cassie with her wild mix of a million different styles. I love her for that, even though she's not a real person. What I want is to see a hippie-man with long dreadlocks and a leather skirt sitting beside a girl in a Chanel-costume in the same office. I want to see fashionable teachers and relaxed bankers in sweatshirts. Is that too much to ask? Perhaps in the year 2113?

Keep rocking your extraordinary looks if you dare, be bold and keep looking forward to the weekend!

  7. I work in retail and I always have to be neatly dressed, no bleached or torn jeans, no shorts, no ultra-short skirts. Apart from that, I can choose whatever I want, except for the time around Christmas where we are supposed to be dressier and more elegant, wearing darker colours. I kind of like that idea, to decorate and dress up literally everything around Christmas ;)
(Sorry to already talk about Christmas when summer hasn't even started properly, lol)

  8. Wunderschön! Du hast so unglaublich lange Beine!
Da trägt jeder was er möchte!

  9. I understand what you say about trying to conform to the standard attire while being true to your style. I attended high school in Afghanistan as an expat and, lemme tell you, some days I wanted to just go to school in a hijab because it would be easier to completely cover up than to follow the shirt-needs-to-cover-bum and the sleeve-length rules and other restrictions.

But about your business outfit, fyi, never wear leggings as pants in a business environment! It's ok to wear printed pants, but if you're going to wear leggings at work, your top should be a tunic/dress hitting at least right above the knee or longer! However, the blazer and cut leather top are perfect :)

    1. Oh, thanks for your comment! Just to let you know, though, these are NOT leggins. They are printed JEANS, made of a very thick jeans material, pockets and the likes.. I would NEVER wear leggins as pants, hahaha. I have that much decency ;)

  10. I really love what you had to say about dressing up, or down for school and/or the work place. At my school nobody dresses up at all and like you said, they do not take you seriously when you pull together a cute outfit but they do when you are in flats and a jumper? I cant wait for 2113 when I can sit next to that cool dude with dreads and watch our awesome styles clash. Its almost hypocritical of a workplace to claim to want more diversity, except they don't accept people expressing themselves via the way they look or dress which is an amazing way of showing everyones diverse and unique styles.

Love this outfit! Pulled together on top, printed bottoms, both trendy and classy. Your so gorgeous!

Kopf hoch! Ich liebe Deinen Stil!

  12. Wow! I didnt know you worked in a primary school. What a thrill! I'm studying teaching profession at university now, and you're absolutely right about uniformity in clothing. When I was as an intern at school, the other teachers only wore dark colors and tracksuits... But hey, I'm not giving up at the moment, if I have to adapt to a specific context I try to be myself. I hope we all have that vision in a short time!
